Cullen, After hearing about your progress for years from Jon G, I finally got a copy of B.O.C. and couldn't put it down. It's a completely unexpected take on this type of story, and a suprisingly uplifting experience to read. An extraordinary accomplishment. Congratulations.

Cullen, thank you for circulating your inspirational experience as a prisoner on foreign soil. You have triumphed over hardship, and it is your resilience that sets you apart from others who have endured similar struggles. I read your article while sitting in the doctor's office today. I was reading GQ thinking how no guy dresses like the ads in the mag and then stumbled upon your article which was terrifying. And people can say you are stupid all they want but fact of the matter is you were young, you made a mistake. About a year after I arrived at Rider University to teach in the English Department, your late aunt and my dearest friend, Patricia Kellogg-Dennis, desperately sought my advice on how to help her nephew who was arrested in my native country for possession of drugs. Cullen Thomas and others like him are ruining South Korean culture and society while disparaging all foreigners living here in Korea. It is wholly wrong to describe him as "innocent" when he obviously is just another sorry product of American education and middle-class ennui. So many of your attitudes and exeriences felt like mine. As soon as Sands Point was mentioned, I knew that you were a PW native. When you mentioned a friend named Mark and a bunch of other details, I had you pegged. I asked my friend of the...(trimmed)

I just finished reading your book and really enjoyed it (basically read it in one day). I could appreciate it on different levels: it gave a good picture of the mistakes of youth, Korean consciousness through the lens of prison life, and -- most importantly -- how one can come to terms with one's destiny (as challenging as it was in your case). I loved your honest, insightful and fluid writing, ...(trimmed)

Having spent a month in Korean prison (Oct. '06) myself for this exact same crime to a much lesser degree (I received a 3 yr. suspended sentence). I was haunted by the eerily familiar thoughts and feelings the book conveyed. I had to put it down several times, because reading it became too overwhelming. I'd like to ask you more ?'s or exchange emails.

I heard you on NPR the other day, and your book sounds great. I don't agree with the criticism you've received. You did the crime, and did the time, and I don't think you are trying to wrongly profit off of it. You had an amazing, if not horrific, experience, and I thank you for the opportunity to learn about another culture.
